UTTERLY DAMNING' REPORT REVEALS SCANDAL OF MoD WASTE

PUBLICATION TIMING RAISES QUESTIONS OVER UK GOVT'S BEHAVIOUR

Commenting on the publication of the long awaited defence procurement review by Bernard Gray, SNP Westminster leader and party Defence spokesperson Angus Robertson MP said revelations over a £35bn budget overspend reignited the debate over Trident renewal whilst the timing of the publication raised questions about the UK government's behavior since it was only published an hour before a defence debate in the Commons..

Mr Robertson said:

“These findings are utterly damning, and it can be little wonder why Downing Street were so desperate to suppress this report.

“This report will fuel questions about whether our forces in Afghanistan are getting the practical support they really need, and totally reignites the debate on Trident renewal and the waste of money that entails in these difficult times.

“When our forces are overstretched and budgets are overspent it is no longer sustainable for the UK Government to waste billions on a new generation of unwanted and unnecessary nuclear weapons. People would rather investment in our troops basic equipment or front line services.

“Any way you look at it - on moral, economic or political grounds - renewal of this nuclear system is untenable and this report, and the manner of its publication, shows how out of touch this Labour government has become.”
