MSP JOINS SUFFRAGETTE MARCH

MSP JOINS SUFFRAGETTE MARCH

Shirley-Anne Somerville MSP will today (Saturday) join thousands of woman
to celebrate the 100th anniversary of an influential suffragette march.

The ‘Gude Cause’ procession re-enacts the 'Edinburgh Procession and
Women's Demonstration' of 1909. It pays tribute to the many women who
campaigned to win the right to vote, as well as celebrating women’s
achievements over the past 100 years.

Ms Somerville said:

"Today's march is a colourful history lesson and a welcome reminder of how
much women have achieved in the past 100 years.

"I have nothing but admiration for the hundreds of suffragettes who were
prepared to struggle against convention to demand equality.

"Without their tremendous courage women wouldn’t enjoy the rights that we
have today.

“We’ve clearly come a long way since then, but we still face many challenges.

"I hope today’s procession not only reminds us of our history and
celebrates the inspiring characters of the past, but encourages more women
to get involved in politics. Women have a crucial role to play in helping
create the fairer society that we all wish to see."
