ALEX SALMOND CALLS FOR ACTION ON LOWERING DRINK DRIVING LIMITS.

ALEX SALMOND CALLS FOR ACTION ON LOWERING DRINK DRIVING LIMITS.

SNP MSP for the Highlands and Islands Dave Thompson has welcomed comments by Alex Salmond today at First Minister's Questions that he supports moves to toughen up drink-drive laws by reducing the limit of alcohol a driver can consume as well as questioning how the UK government's recent consultation on road safety failed to address the possibility of lowering the existing limit.

Mr Thompson has campaigned strongly for the blood alcohol limit to be lowered from 80 mg to the European standard of 50 mg.

His campaign has been backed by the BMA, police organisations and Scotland's Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill.
Commenting on today's comments by the First Minister Mr Thompson said:

"It is very welcome that the First Minister has made this unequivocal statement on the drink-driving limit. Drink driving remains a significant problem in our society and we must take action.

"I have been campaigning to see the drink driving limit tightened to a maximum of 50mg of alcohol in the blood, if not less.

"Unfortunately whilst police in Scotland can carry out breath tests and we do take action to educate drivers the real steps to tighten the drink drive limit have to be taken by the UK Government.

"The UK Government is taking too long and must bring forward a consultation and proposals now to help combat drink driving problems.

"The Scottish Government has made clear its support for lowering the limit, the UK Government must do the same."
