UK GOVERNMENT EXTENDS MUSIC COPYRIGHT TO 70 YEARS.

WISHART WELCOMES MUSIC COPYRIGHT EXTENSION.

Pete Wishart, MP for Perth and North Perthshire, today welcomed the UK Governments announcement that copyright for musicians on sound recordings be extended to 70 years. Mr Wishart has long campaigned for term extension introducing a Private Members Bill in the last parliamentary session. Mr Wishart is himself a musician and former member of rock bands Runrig and Big Country. Speaking today Mr Wishart said: “This is good news for musicians and will end the appalling situation where musicians will lose income from their recordings in their old age.

”All other creators and artists secure a lifetime of royalties and it is only right and proper that this unique discrimination against musicians comes to and end. “The whole music industry have been campaigning hard for this extension and I am delighted that the Government has responded positively to this excellent campaign “The European Union is currently considering this issue, and with the UK having the largest music industry in Europe, this decision will help ensure that we get a satisfactory outcome for musicians across the whole European Union.”
