IRAQ STAMPS CAMPAIGN WINS SCOTTISH PARLIAMENTARY BACKING.

IRAQ STAMPS CAMPAIGN WINS SCOTTISH PARLIAMENTARY BACKING.

Efforts by artist Steve McQueen to commemorate UK servicemen and women killed in Iraq on Royal Mail stamps have won support in the Scottish Parliament.

SNP MSP Aileen Campbell has lodged a parliamentary motion and is urging MSPs to back calls for the Royal Mail to issue stamps featuring images of those killed in Iraq.

Steve McQueen’s work “Queen and Country” is currently on display in the Scottish Gallery of Modern Art. The work has been purchased by the Art Fund who are hosting an online petition calling on the Royal Mail to agree to publish the stamps.

Commenting Ms Campbell said;

“Steve McQueen’s efforts to commemorate servicemen and women killed in Iraq deserve all our support.

“With the support of families who have lost loved ones to the war this should not just be a work of art but a work of commemoration.

“Regardless of how we feel about the decision to go to war it is right that we recognise those who have taken part in it and remember those who have lost their lives.

“I hope MSPs will add their voice to this call and make clear to Royal Mail that it is incumbent on them to grant this request.”
