SNP EXPRESSES CONCERN FOR CARRIER CONTRACT DELAYS
SNP EXPRESSES CONCERN FOR CARRIER CONTRACT DELAYS
Commenting on a report in the Financial Times that there may be a two year delay in the contract for the Royal Navy's new aircraft carriers the SNP's Depute Leader and MSP for Govan Nicola Sturgeon MSP said:
"As the local MSP for Govan where the BVT yards employ a significant number of people I am very concerned about this report and the impact it could have on jobs in the area. I will be meeting the management of BVT before Christmas to discuss my concerns.
"Coming on top of the news of Vic Emery's departure and that he is not being replaced by another Managing Director this will only add to the unease.
"It was thought we were past the period of uncertainty caused by previous Ministry of Defence delays but this report that there may be a further two year delay will only take us back to that position.
"Scottish shipyards are the finest in Europe and I would call on the Defence Secretary John Hutton to clarify the UK government's position as soon as possible."
SNP Westminster leader, and Defence spokesperson, Angus Robertson MP, also expressed concern. He said:
"In these troubled economic times I would have thought that ensuring this contract went ahead would be the best option.
"However these reports are a matter of grave concern. Scotland already does not benefit from a fair share of MoD procurement contracts and this news raises questions about the UK government's commitment to Scottish defence contractors.
"I will be seeking answers from John Hutton on this issue and arguing that delays are not in the best interests of Scottish ship yards, their excellent workforce and the wider economy."
