SNP MSP EXPRESSES CONCERN ABOUT FIFA DECISION ON OLYMPIC TEAM.

SNP MSP Stuart McMillan, a member of the Scottish Parliament football team, has expressed concern at the news that FIFA could formally approve a GB football team for the Olympics later this week despite opposition from the football associations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and all national fan associations throughout the UK. Mr McMillan said: "The football authorities of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are opposed to a British Olympic side and have reaffirmed that they will not risk their status as independent football nations. "Significantly, all four home nations' supporters associations are actively working together to oppose this irresponsible idea. "Some FIFA member countries have attempted on a number of occasions to remove the privileges of the home nations and force them to play as one international side. "FIFA officials are simply not in a position to guarantee their members agree that a one-off Olympic team will not risk the four home nations' position as individual members. It is a democratic organisation that is bound by the votes of the associated members. "In any case, FIFA President Sepp Blatter has made it clear that a British Olympic side would put at risk the future of Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland as independent teams. "With former Scotland coach Craig Brown is to front the 'No to Team GB' campaign, I hope he can use his influence to make those with the power listen to the Scottish people and reject this ludicrous idea."
