VIRGIN GROUP GALACTIC PRESIDENT TO VISIT NORTH SCOTLAND.

VIRGIN GROUP GALACTIC PRESIDENT TO VISIT NORTH SCOTLAND.

SNP Westminster leader and Moray MP Angus Robertson has today [Monday] welcomed Virgin Galactic President Will Whitehorn to his Moray constituency.

During the visit arranged by the local MP, Mr Whitehorn will be meeting with Council and Enterprise chiefs to discuss the potential for commercial spaceflight from the airbase at RAF Lossiemouth in Moray.

The SNP MP will also introduce Mr Whitehorn to the Lossiemouth Business Action Group before the Virgin Galactic President gives a lecture on commercial spaceflight at Lossiemouth Town Hall.

The lecture is the second in a series planned by Angus Robertson and follows on from a lecture earlier in the year by the German Ambassador.
Speaking ahead of the lecture Angus Robertson MP said: "I am delighted to have secured this visit and lecture by Will Whitehorn of Virgin Galactic to outline his company's visionary plans for commercial space travel. "People should be in no doubt that the prospect of spaceflight from Moray is a serious one and in that context it is vital that communication develops and grows with both the local Lossiemouth community and with the Local Authority and Enterprise Company.

"The technological advancements that have already been achieved by the Virgin Galactic project are amazing and there is a significant opportunity for Lossiemouth and Moray as a whole to benefit from the technology investment, jobs and tourism that such a project attracts."

Following a visit to RAF Lossiemouth previously Virgin Galactic President Will Whitehorn said Lossiemouth had the edge on other UK sites. He commented: "I looked at the facilities there and, along with a couple of other UK sites, it could be ideal for a summer flying programme in the future due to its long runway and clear airspace in the Moray Firth.

"The view of Scotland would be pretty spectacular as well. Permissions would be needed but will not be sought until we are ready.”

About Mr Will Whitehorn,

As a senior member of management of the Virgin Group, Will Whitehorn has been variously described as Richard Branson's ‘no 2’. He was educated in Edinburgh and Aberdeen, and following graduation from the University of Aberdeen in 1981, Will served a sabbatical year as President of the Student Union.

Will began his career with British International Helicopters before moving to British Airways and then to Thomas Cook. He was recruited to Virgin by the then Managing Director of Virgin, Donald Cruickshank, and was engaged, initially, to boost the image of the Virgin Group in the City. He is a director of several Virgin Companies including Virgin Rail.
