CALMAN COMMISSION OFFERS CONSTITUTIONAL SQUEAK.
SNP MSP Keith Brown today called the Calman Commission a constitutional mouse as the Commission’s first report failed to offer any positive suggestions or recommendations for Scotland’s future.
The Commission specifically excluded independence for Scotland from its discussions and has ruled out full fiscal autonomy.
Speaking from the Scottish Parliament Mr Brown said;
“Calman’s constitutional mouse has squeaked when Scotland needs a Celtic roar and the financial powers to build a Lion economy.
“After half a million pounds of public money, twelve months and two party leaders there is nothing new in this report. This Commission has been a complete damp squib.
“What is needed are the full powers of an equal and independent nation to build the best possible future for all in Scotland.
“Instead of a history of devolution, Scotland needs a blueprint for the future and that future is a referendum on independence in 2010.
“Where the SNP and Scottish Government are looking forward for Scotland and placing the decision in the hands of the Scottish people through a referendum, Calman and the unionist opposition parties are looking backward.
“Consideration of issues such as control of firearms, animal health and broadcasting are welcome but do not need this Commission. Jacqui Smith could take the responsible step tomorrow and give Scotland the powers to control airguns and firearms in Scotland, as the UK Government did on the marine environment only last week.
“With the Commission’s recommendations on fiscal powers already under fire from one of their expert panel, they have little credibility left.”
