BAA SELL OFF MUST MEAN BETTER SERVICES FOR SCOTLAND.

BAA SELL OFF MUST MEAN BETTER SERVICES FOR SCOTLAND.

SNP MSPs today welcomed the recommendation from the Competition Commission that BAA should sell off one of its Scottish airports.

The Commission has recommended the sell off of Edinburgh airport to improve competition but has stated it is open to the “alternative of selling Glasgow airport”.

SNP MSP Gil Paterson, who has repeatedly raised the problems of BAA ownership and an absence of regulation welcomed the decision to break up BAA’s ownership in Scotland. Lothians MSPs have called for any new owner for Edinburgh to meet BAA’s planned investment in Edinburgh as a minimum condition.

West of Scotland MSP Gil Paterson said;

“BAA’s ownership of Scotland’s airports has restricted competition and held back our economy.

“We need real competition between the three lowland Scottish airports to ensure the best services, more direct international flights and competitive prices for business and tourism.

“It is clear BAA would rather sell Glasgow than Edinburgh. Regardless of which airport is sold it is vital that the sell-off also considers the interests of those who live around the airport and sees an end to the self-regulation of airports that has disturbed so many people in their vicinity.”

Commenting on the decision to recommend Edinburgh for sale SNP MSP for the Lothians and Transport Committee member Shirley-Anne Somerville said;

“We need to see direct international flights and real investment to improve services at these airports. Scottish passengers should not continually have to travel through London or Amsterdam.

“If Edinburgh is to be sold any new operator must guarantee to match the £265 million of investment planned by BAA for the next 10 years.

“Edinburgh is Scotland’s gateway and the airport plays a key role in building business in the region. A new owner must show that commitment and the investment to help build a sustainable economy.”
