SCOTLAND TOPS EURO LEAGUE TABLE FOR PRISON POPULATION.

SCOTLAND TOPS EURO LEAGUE TABLE FOR PRISON POPULATION. SNP

GOVERNMENT SORTING OUT LABOUR/TORY MESS.

Commenting on the figures revealed from the Scottish Policy Innovation Forum and reported today – that proportionately Scotland sends more of its people to prison on a daily basis than any other country in Europe, including Russia and Turkey - SNP MSP Angela Constance - a member of the Scottish Parliament's Justice Committee - said:

"These figures show how utterly absurd and opportunistic the attacks from Labour and the Tories are on law and order in Scotland. Generations of Labour and Tory governments failed the needs of the Scottish people on justice policy, and they should at least have the humility to let Scotland's Government get on with the job of building a penal policy that is right for Scotland in the 21st century.

"We are jailing more people in Scotland than any other European country – at massive cost to the taxpayer – and more than ever before, while crime is at its lowest in 25 years. "That is the shambles the SNP inherited from Labour and the Tories.

At long last, we have a government in Scotland that is getting to grips with the issues, and the Prisons Commission chaired by former Labour First Minister Henry McLeish is part of that process.

The spectacle of Labour's justice spokesperson attacking the work of Henry McLeish shows just what a mess Labour are in on justice, as on everything else.
"The SNP government are building three new prisons – indeed Addiewell is now opening – so that people who are a danger to society are put behind bars, where they belong.

And we also need tough community sentences so that where appropriate lawbreakers pay back their debt to society through hard work – and the re-offending rate is also lower compared to people sent to prison on a revolving door basis."
