ROBERTSON PREVIEW’S QUEEN’S SPEECH

ROBERTSON PREVIEW’S QUEEN’S SPEECH

Speaking in advance of the Queen’s Speech tomorrow, SNP Westminster leader Angus Robertson MP, said that any eleventh-hour rewrites of the legislative programme should be used to rule out planned cuts to the Scottish Government’s budget, and release £1bn of Scottish resources being withheld by the Treasury.
Mr Robertson said:
”By all accounts the Queen’s Speech has been subject to an eleventh-hour re-write as Gordon Brown cuts back his programme to focus on the economy.
”If the prime minister seriously wants to help the Scottish economy he should rule out Labour’s planned cuts to the Scottish Government’s budget, and release the £1bn of Scottish resources being withheld by the Treasury.
”In tough times, these resources should be put to work for the people of Scotland.
”And if Gordon Brown really wants to make efficiency savings, he should start by scrapping Trident and ditching plans for unwanted ID cards.
“At a time of economic downturn and substantial pressure on government spending, it is utterly irresponsible to waste billions on a new generation of unnecessary weapons of mass destruction, and unwanted ID cards.
”The prime minister should also bring forward a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq. Apart from appalling human cost of the UK Governments worst foreign policy decision in recent times, the economic consequences have also been far reaching.
”Gordon Brown promised us vision, but he has left the country starring into a black hole.”
