BAD WEEK FORCES RETREAT FOR LABOUR MSP LEADER IAIN GRAY.

GRAY MAN GOES INVISIBLE!

Commenting on a disastrous week for Iain Gray in which; * One of his leadership campaign donors - Lord Moonie was accused of taking cash for laws [1]; * One of his backbench MSPs - Lord Foulkes - was exposed as taking £36,000 a year for offering tours of the House of Lords [2] * His attempts to play party political games with Scotland's budget backfired * His party split over his call for a motion of no confidence in the government [3] * He withdrew from appearing on BBC Question Time [4]

SNP MSP Jamie Hepburn said;

"The Gray man of Scottish politics is fast becoming the invisible man.

"With his humiliating budget blunder and his damaging connections to alleged "dodgy" peers this has been a bad week for Labour's invisible leader.

"His speedy budget u-turn shows how scared Iain Gray is of the voters - his disappearance from Question Time only confirms that fear of the public.

"His efforts to be cleaner than clean have been destroyed as one of his campaign donors - Gordon Brown's close friend Lord Moonie - has been accused of taking cash for laws and Lord Foulkes, his back bench buddy, has been exposed as taking £36,000 to offer tours of the House of Lords.

"Iain Gray made a huge budget blunder and his friends in the House of Lords are doing him no favours.

"The Labour party across Scotland will be regretting his disastrous decision to vote against the Scottish budget in the middle of Labour's recession."

1. Iain Gray's Register of Interests states:

"On 20 August 2008 I received a donation of between £501 and £1,000 (specifically £1,000) from Lewis Moonie. This gift was for the purpose of paying for leadership campaign expenses for the Iain Gray Campaign (Election of Leader of Labour in Scottish Parliament). [Registered 26 August 2008]"

Lewis Moonie is one of the peers accused of taking Cash for Laws by the Sunday Times.

2. Lord Foulkes, an MSP for the Lothians was revealed to receive £36,000 a year for offering tours of the Lords and introductions to ministers. Lord Foulkes also claims over £50,000 of expenses for his attendence at the Lords.
