SNP BACK CALLS ON UK GOVERNMENT FOR TORTURE STATEMENT.

SNP Westminster leader and Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Angus Robertson MP, has backed demands for a parliamentary statement following allegations that the UK Government was complicit in the torture of a British resident held in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

Following a High Court ruling which suggested that the US threatened to withdraw intelligence help from the UK if details were released, Mr Robertson said:

”The implication that a British citizen has been tortured, that our courts have been threatened, and that the UK Government has been complicit, warrant an immediate and full statement by Ministers.

”Labour’s manifesto pledge that it would conduct an ethical foreign policy, such as it was, is now in complete tatters.”
