SCOTTISH VOTERS BACK SNP OVER BUDGET – FIRST MINISTER'S RATINGS SOAR.

SCOTTISH VOTERS BACK SNP OVER BUDGET – FIRST MINISTER'S RATINGS SOAR.

OPPOSITION MISJUDGED PUBLIC MOOD AND ARE PAYING THE PRICE.

SNP WOULD EXTEND LEAD IN HOLYROOD ELECTION – 10 POINTS UP FOR WESTMINSTER.

The Scottish National Party has welcomed the results of a YouGov poll in the Sunday Times today, which show huge public support for the SNP Government over the Budget – with all the other parties on negative ratings – and that the SNP would extend its Scottish Parliament lead over Labour to six points, compared to 1 point in the May 2007 election.
SNP Depute Leader and Deputy First Minister Ms Nicola Sturgeon MSP said: "This is an excellent poll for the SNP, and fully vindicates the Scottish Government's handling of the Budget process. The opposition parties who voted against the Budget totally misjudged the public mood, and are paying the price for their irresponsible conduct. "The poll was taken immediately after Labour, the Liberal Democrats and Greens voted against Scotland's £33 billion budget, and as we've moved through the week the SNP Government's position has become stronger and stronger. "Our priority is to reach agreement to pass the 2009/10 Budget for the people of Scotland as quickly as possible, and we are extremely confident of delivering a majority vote in Parliament. "It's no wonder the parties who opposed the Budget are now looking to reach agreement with the Government rather than face an election. Compared to negative ratings for all the opposition leaders on the Budget, the First Minister's standing continues to soar, and the SNP's lead continues to grow in both the constituency and regional polls since we won the Scottish elections in May 2007. "We have extended our Holyrood lead over Labour to 6 points, compared to 1 point in May 2007, and are nearly ten points up for a Westminster election. "And despite the fact that all of the key economic powers lie with Westminster at present, Alex Salmond has drawn level with Gordon Brown in terms of trust to handle the economy – totally turning round a 19 point lead for Mr Brown last October. This demonstrates that the Scottish people support the SNP Government's six-point economic recovery plan – including the Council Tax freeze and business rates cuts – while the dithering UK Labour government presides over a deepening recession. "The figures on the constitution are relatively static since last October, and show a strong base of support for independence. The SNP are confident of winning the case for independence and equality for Scotland – it is the London parties who are running scared of a referendum."
