COMMONS COMMITTEE CALLS FOR REVIEW OF TRANSMISSION CHARGING

COMMONS COMMITTEE CALLS FOR REVIEW OF TRANSMISSION CHARGING

SNP Energy Spokesman and Member of the House of Commons Energy and Climate Change Committee, Mike Weir MP, has welcomed a recommendation by the Committee for an independent review of the transmission charging regime which is currently disadvantaging Scotland’s renewable energy producers.

Commenting, Mr Weir said:

“The Committee’s acknowledgement of the unfair impact of the current regime on Scottish renewable generators is very welcome. I hope the UK Government will act without delay on the recommendation for an independent report on transmission charging.

“The current regime was designed for a different energy mix and leads to energy generators remote parts of Scotland paying considerably higher charges than those closer to population centres.

“Realising Scotland’s renewable potential is vital if we are to meet the ambitious climate change targets we have set and we must get the transmission charging regime right if we are to realise our renewables ambitions.

"The Scottish Government has set the benchmark in championing a low carbon economy - by backing investment in green, renewable energy sources and leading the way with tough emissions targets.

“The UK Government must now follow this lead and act on the Committee’s recommendations immediately."
