LABOUR EXPENSES SCANDAL GOES STRAIGHT TO THE HEART OF UK GOVERNMENT

LABOUR EXPENSES SCANDAL GOES STRAIGHT TO THE HEART OF UK GOVERNMENT

INTERNAL INVESTIGATION OVER WHO ADVISED DEVINE

It has today (Monday) emerged that the Labour Party have begun an internal
investigation after Livingston MP Jim Devine - one of the three MPs
charged with theft - claimed that he was told by one of the party’s whips
that he could move money between expense accounts.

Labour have also now suspended all three MPs under investigation for
fraudulent claims - more than 3 days after charges were revealed.

Commenting on these latest revelations, SNP MSP for Livingston, Angela
Constance said:

"This expenses scandal goes straight to the heart of the UK Government.

"First, the Prime Minister Gordon Brown is revealed as the Scottish MP who
paid back the most in wrongly claimed expenses and now it emerges that
senior Labour figures may have advised MPs to carry out potentially
fraudulent activities.

"How can Gordon Brown expect people to trust Labour politicians when they
can’t even trust each other?

"The Prime Minister has dithered once again – taking all weekend to
suspend these MPs.

"Labour's commitment to cracking down on expense abuses is desperately
undermined by reports that the party's official lawyer is advising all
three compromised MPs.

"Serious questions must be asked over how committed the Labour party are
to tackling the Westminster expenses culture."
