PRECIOUS BELONGS TO GLASGOW

HOME OFFICE SHOULD DROP CASE TODAY

SNP MSP Anne McLaughlin has today highlighted the continuing case of her
constituent Florence Mhango and her 10 year old daughter Precious who
continue to be faced with the threat of deportation despite Precious
having lived in the UK for the majority of her life and for the last 3
years in Glasgow.

In November a campaign on behalf of the Mhangos by the community in
Cranhill where they live and supported by people across the country saw
the deportation postponed as their lawyers won the right to apply for
judicial review.

Their case for Judicial review will be heard tomorrow (10th February)
however the Home Office can still drop the case against them and allow the
two to remain in Scotland.

Ms McLaughlin is encouraging as many people as possible to contact the
Home Office and call for the family to be granted leave to remain.

Glasgow MSP Ms McLaughlin said:

“Precious belongs to Glasgow.

“The Home Office still have time to drop the case and show that there is
humanity in our asylum system.

“A simple letter from the immigration minister could stop this process and
guarantee that this young girl will never go through the trauma of
detention and deportation again.

“No one denies that deportations have to happen but this is a young girl
who has spent the majority of her life in Glasgow and who faces being sent
away to a family she has not met and does not know.

“It is likely that she would not just be separated from her friends and
community in Glasgow but from her mother if she is returned to Malawi.

“There has been outcry across Scotland over this case. Letters of support
have been sent from the EIS, from The Girls' Brigade Association of
Scotland, from the churches and her school. Tomorrow’s hearing may be the
last chance for the legal system to recognise that Glasgow is their home
but the Home Office can make that decision at any time and I urge them to
do so today.”
