OPPOSITION MAKE MOCKERY OF JUSTICE COMMITTEE
MEGRAHI REPORT WAS TURNED INTO KANGAROO COURT
FAILED TO CALL SIGNIFICANT LIST OF WITNESSES
Commenting on the report released by the Justice Committee on the release of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi on compassionate grounds, committee member Stewart Maxwell MSP said the opposition had made a mockery of its position by turning into a kangaroo court after they failed to call any other witnesses bar the Justice Secretary.
Commenting Mr Maxwell said:
“Parliamentary time and resources have been wasted on what was a political stitch up by the opposition to push their own partisan prejudices.
“They had made their mind up before we even held this inquiry. The proof of that is the fact they called no other witnesses bar the Cabinet Secretary and his officials.
“The opposition have shown a complete lack of confidence in their own arguments and have tried to turn a respected Parliamentary committee into a kangaroo court.
“Nevertheless they did find it difficult to get it all their own way. They could not deny that the Cabinet Secretary was put in an unenviable position for what was a difficult and challenging decision; and that the Scottish Government was helpful in the provision of background documents.
“And irrespective of all the party politicking and the so-called questions over technical procedures, in the final analysis the committee have supported the fact that the Cabinet Secretary took full account of all points of view and particularly the victims’ families when coming to his decision and that he acted in good faith.
“The opposition did not help themselves by contradicting the points made on medical opinions. It is illogical to say consideration should have been given to a second opinion just after they accepted that additional opinions had been sought.
“That stark contradiction just exposes how the opposition were intent on holding on to their partisan prejudices and feared calling any other significant witnesses to embarrass them.”
