SNP COMMENT ON AFGHANISTAN POLL FINDINGS

SNP COMMENT ON AFGHANISTAN POLL FINDINGS

A ComRes poll conducted for Tuesday's BBC Newsnight programme has found that 69% of people believe the UK Labour government has not done all it can to support UK forces fighting in Afghanistan while 64% believe the war in the region is unwinnable.

The poll of 1,004 people in England, Scotland and Wales was conducted between the 19th and 21st February 2010.

Commenting, SNP Westminster Leader and Defence Spokesperson Angus Robertson MP said:

"There is enormous public support for the troops on the ground, but little confidence in the strategy the UK Government is pursuing.

"The Taliban has regrouped, the heroin trade is flourishing and we are backing a government with corruption problems. Meanwhile, too many ordinary Afghans are seeing precious little reconstruction and development.

“Last month, we had warm words at an international conference but what our service personnel serving on the frontline really need is a full, overarching review of UK strategy which considers all of the options including the possibility of withdrawal.”
