CAMERON SPEECH – PEOPLE SAYING ‘YES’ TO SNP AND ‘NO’ TO TORIES.

CAMERON SPEECH – PEOPLE SAYING ‘YES’ TO SNP AND ‘NO’ TO TORIES.

Commenting on David Cameron’s speech to the Scottish Conservative
Conference SNP MP for Perth and North Perthshire Pete Wishart said;

“Today’s Scottish opinion poll figures show SNP support at 40 per cent for
the European elections, compared to just 13 per cent for the Tories –
three-times as much – and 38 per cent for a Westminster election, compared
to just 15 per cent for the Tories. Two years into a highly successful
SNP government under the leadership of First Minister Alex Salmond, and
the people are saying Yes to the SNP – and No to the Tories and the other
London parties.

“Across Scotland, voters want politicians who are working to protect
Scotland’s jobs and deliver economic recovery – and the SNP Government’s
recovery programme is supporting tens of thousands of jobs.

“In contrast, the Tories – just like Labour – are planning to slash
Scottish spending, which would destroy thousands of jobs and threaten our
economic recovery.

“At the Westminster election, the way to protect and promote Scottish
interests is to return a block of 20 SNP MPs to support the work of the
Scottish Government, and oppose the cuts both the Tories and Labour are
proposing.

"And Scotland’s constitution is for the people to decide in the referendum
that the SNP Government will bring forward in 2010. That is what David
Cameron should support – instead of the Tories ganging up with the other
London parties to deny the people of Scotland the opportunity to choose
independence.”

Commenting on the Tory leaders attack on First Minister Alex Salmond Mr
Wishart added;

“The Tories are like a cracked record – they never have anything positive
to say. Alex Salmond is doing exactly what he said he would do in the
2005 and 2007 elections – to serve his constituents for a full
parliamentary term – and won overwhelming support from the people of the
North East on that basis.

“A real test of opinion in Banff & Buchan came last May in the Troup Ward
by-election, when the SNP increased our first preference votes by 15% to
63% - a 5% swing from Tory to the SNP. By those measures, it is clear
that the people of north-east Scotland have spoken in support of Alex
Salmond and the SNP.

“And Mr Salmond has fulfilled his pledge to benefit from only one
parliamentary salary, by donating his gross Holyrood salary to a
charitable trust to benefit youth and community organisations across the
North East of Scotland – the only dual mandate member ever to take such an
excellent initiative."
