TOGETHER WE CAN TACKLE CHILD POVERTY.

TOGETHER WE CAN TACKLE CHILD POVERTY.

Commenting on the publication of the Local Government and Communities Committee Report on Child Poverty which has called for a Scottish approach to the tax and benefits systems SNP MSP Bob Doris – a member of the committee – said:

“In these troubled economic times what people want to see is all parties working constructively to drive down child poverty

“The Committee’s report is recognition by all the political parties involved of the seriousness of this issue.

“Two progressive and consensual suggestions are that UK ministers could be scrutinised by the Scottish Parliament’s committees and that a creative approach is taken to the UK tax and benefit system in Scotland. This could allow for flexibility within the system in Scotland to best meet our target to tackle child poverty. This is far reaching and welcome.

“Another suggestion involves helping kinship carers of looked after children who are concerned that local authority allowances may be clawed back and that they may lose child tax credit. The DWP’s position remains unclear in this regard and it is good that we are all seeking clarification in this matter.

“Driving down child poverty is an issue where all politicians in Scotland can come together to work in ensuring a fairer and wealthier Scotland.”
