TOGETHER WE CAN SEND A MESSAGE ON ROYAL MAIL PRIVATISATION.

SNP EURO CANDIDATE VOICES OPPOSITION TO MANDELSON’S PLANS

SNP President and European candidate, Ian Hudghton, said today (Thursday)
that a vote for the SNP in the upcoming European elections will send a
strong message that Scotland does not support the creeping privatisation
of the Royal Mail.

The SNP has been campaigning for months against the Labour government’s
plans for Royal Mail privatisation which would spell the beginning of the
end for Royal Mail, opening the door to job losses, service cuts and a
deterioration in the working conditions of postal workers.

Commenting Mr Hudghton said:

“It says everything about Labour's priorities that, during a recession,
they are prepared to go ahead with these privatisation plans and the
threat they pose to jobs and services.

“When people all over Scotland are facing redundancy and fearing for their
jobs, the last thing they want is for control to be handed to a private
partner whose only concern would be to make a profit.

“SNP parliamentarians are working with the Scottish Government to support
jobs and investment in our economic recovery. We will continue to fight
for the retention of the publicly-owned Royal Mail and the vital service
it provides to Scottish businesses and communities.

“The SNP has opposed Royal Mail privatisation from the very outset, and
the chorus against the plans has been growing louder by the day.

“Labour are in the embarrassing position of defending these plans against
overwhelming public opposition.

“The European elections in Scotland are a two horse race between the SNP
and Labour. Only a vote for the SNP that can send a message that Scotland
doesn’t want Royal Mail privatisation.”
